Korean “Hoesik” Culture and Drinking Etiquette

반응형

Hoesik (회식) refers to after-work social gatherings, usually involving a meal and drinks with colleagues. It's a big part of Korean work culture and can be both fun and culturally rich — but it comes with its own etiquette.

👨‍💼 Respecting Hierarchy

  • Always wait for your boss or senior colleague to start drinking or give a toast.
  • When clinking glasses, hold yours slightly lower if the other person is older or higher in rank — it's a gesture of respect.

🥂 Pouring Drinks

  • Never pour your own drink. Pour for others and let them pour for you.
  • Use two hands when pouring or receiving a drink, especially with elders or higher-ups.
  • If someone pours you a drink, it's polite to drink at least a sip right away.

🙈 How to Drink Politely

  • Turn your head to the side (usually left) when drinking in front of a senior — it's a sign of humility.
  • Drink in moderation unless the atmosphere is casual; you’re never obligated to overdrink.
  • You can politely decline more alcohol by saying, “술은 괜찮습니다” (Sul-eun gwaen-chan-seum-ni-da) — “No more alcohol for me, thank you.”

🍜 The Multi-Round Culture

  • Hoesik often has multiple rounds: 1차 (first round: dinner), 2차 (second round: drinks), 3차 (karaoke or bar).
  • It’s common to stay for the first round and politely leave after — just say thank you and excuse yourself respectfully.

Understanding hoesik etiquette helps you navigate Korean social dynamics and builds stronger relationships, whether with coworkers, friends, or new acquaintances.
